Here is a caricature I owe someone. I started one in the park, but it was crap. I enjoy the more realistic with minimal exaggeration type caricatures. No prelim drawing for this one, as I am trying to learn to be comfortable using photoshop solely. I think I will do a post on some caricature artists I am supa into lately. Also, big congrats to Mr. Bosma, Holley, Chin, Buzelli, and everyone else who a medal in Society of Illustrators!

I was supposed to be doing other stuff and got into just messing with this. Podcasts are distracting and have been taking up a lot of my attention lately. This is just photoshop. There have been many attempts lately to create pieces only using photoshop. I normally use graphite, vellum, and photoshop... so yeah. Now back to real work.

Also, here is another Ten Paces and Draw piece. It is a portrait of the wonderfully gifted singer/songwriter Janelle Monae. Steve Schwartz and I were asked to illustrate Monae's song Without a Fight. I have been trying to be a bit more D.I.Y. lately in my poorness. I have been getting a few gigs for parties and other events doing caricatures, and so, I thought it would nice to have cards for it. People always asked for one. These cards for my caricatures were printed at Kinko's for under two dollars. A deal fasho! If you don't have the money, but do have the time, its definitely worth it.

Still working on color choices and some filling. I would say I am halfway through step two.

The beginning for me is usually slow, conceptualizing and envisioning, but then there is a fluidity and understanding, and things just seem to find their proper place. I took a clumsy approach but would say that it is starting to come together. For me, half of the fruition of a piece is in those very last few steps....

Here is a recent piece I did for Orange Coast Magazine. The article was comparing an efficient, intelligent car salesman, to a ignorant, greedy one. Art Director Carly Herbert was really fun to work with and gave me a good bit of freedom. You can see the change from sketch one to final. I thought it might be nice if I shared some photos of my workspace. So here it tis! A lot of drawing supplies, books, and a few snippets of some projects I have been working on. I always enjoy seeing artists studios, wether it be contemporary or old dead guys; it is like a peak into their mind, or their motivations. I have also been going to get my food at the market/s lately, and their are so many nice arrangements and color combinations among the fruit and veggies. Messing around a bit more with photoshop brushes that Chris Wahl posted. Really dig his stuff, especially now that I have a new founded appreciation for caricatures, since I am a caricature arteest at Legoland (which is the best job ever).

Just finished an Illustration and still had some left over energy, so I decided to experiment with some photoshop brushes. I will probably mess around with these a bit more because I like how this came out. I still love seeing the history of the drawing itself, but it feels good to lose the line sometimes.

These magnificent cats are native to tropical zones in Southeast Asia and temperate regions like the Russian Far East. Less than 6,000 tigers remain in the wild. The most urgent threat to the species is poaching for body parts and bones used in traditional Asian medicines.

Since 1970, the Black Rhino population, native to southern and east Africa, has declined by 90% to less than 3,000. They are killed primarily for their horns. Trade of Rhinos has been banned for more than twenty years. Although having banned trading of the species, there still continues to be a great demand for Rhino parts.

Native to Mexico, this colorful parrot species, with the ability to mimic the human voice, has been significantly reduced in numbers due to a huge demand for these lovely pet birds, especially from the United States. Even after prohibiting the sale of these green-cheeked birds, droves of the species are still being illegally traded across the Mexico/US border.

Pandas like to be by themselves most of the year, and they have a very short breeding season when a male will look for a female to mate with. Females give birth to one or two cubs, which are very dependent on their mothers during the first few years of life. In the wild, mother pandas will care for only one of the young. In panda facilities in China, keepers help to hand raise any twin cubs. One baby is left with the mother and the keepers switch the twins every few days so each one gets care and milk directly from the mother.

These ancient living fish fossils are found in the Caspian Sea. Valued throughout the world by connoisseurs for their superior quality caviar, poaching is out of control due to excessive demand and high prices paid for the Sturgeons' "pearl-like" caviar.

I realized from looking at the Crushin postcard on my site that a lot was lost due to constraining the size of the image. I wish all of my pieces could have an infinite zoom function like dis, which is the coolest. Anyway, these two things, the couple and the motors that run the psychedelic love mobile, were my favorite, and I was saddened that they got pushed too far back.
